Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUV, the Brezza, achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing 1 million units in sales since its launch in March 2016. This achievement places the Brezza as the leading SUV in the fiscal year 2023-24, outperforming rivals like Tata Nexon. The journey from its introduction to this milestone underscores its popularity in India’s competitive SUV market.
Journey to 1 Million Units
Launched in March 2016 as the Vitara Brezza, the compact SUV took 94 months to reach the 1 million units mark. From its launch until the end of November 2023, it sold approximately 996,608 units. With an estimated 111,371 units sold from April to November 2023, the Brezza showcased a robust monthly average sales of 13,921 units.
Facelift and CNG Variant Boost
Maruti Suzuki introduced a facelift to the Brezza, propelling it to the top spot in SUV sales for the financial year 2023-24. The addition of a CNG variant in March 2023 further bolstered its sales, surpassing the Tata Nexon, the previous bestseller in FY 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Under the Hood and Competitors
The Brezza, a sub-four-metre compact SUV, is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 101 bhp and 136.8 Nm of peak torque. It offers both a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Brezza competes with rivals like Tata Nexon, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and Hyundai Creta.
Market Dominance
Maruti Suzuki, traditionally known for budget cars, disrupts its image with the success of the Brezza. With recent additions like the Baleno-based crossover, Fronx, and mid-size SUV, Grand Vitara, the company now commands over 50% market share in the SUV segment.
