Toyota Kirloskar Motor Signs MoU with Ohmium to Drive Scalable Green Hydrogen Solutions in India

The collaboration aims to develop green hydrogen-based power solutions for mobility and stationary use in India, highlighting Toyota’s leadership in fuel cell technology and commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy and clean energy transition.

Strengthening its commitment to carbon neutrality and clean energy innovation, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bengaluru-based Ohmium International, a leading provider of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen technology.

The collaboration aims to jointly develop integrated green hydrogen-based power solutions for both mobility and stationary applications in India. This strategic alliance underscores Toyota’s leadership in fuel cell technology and its ongoing efforts to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable fuel of the future. Through this partnership, TKM reinforces its vision to support a thriving hydrogen economy and contribute meaningfully to the country’s clean energy transition.

India aims to achieve energy independence by 2047 and net-zero emissions by 2070, with Green Hydrogen playing a crucial role in this transition. To support this, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) and Ohmium International have signed an MoU to co-develop scalable Green Hydrogen-based power solutions.

Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission (2023) and Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050, the partnership combines Ohmium’s expertise in modular PEM electrolyzers and Toyota’s leadership in fuel-cell technology. The collaboration will explore integrated solutions like hydrogen-powered microgrids for applications such as data centres and remote locations.

TKM will provide fuel cell modules, system integration, and technical support, while Ohmium will handle the design, development, and evaluation of the prototype. The joint effort aims to create efficient, scalable, and sustainable hydrogen energy systems to support India’s clean energy goals.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has been a frontrunner in advancing India’s hydrogen ecosystem, beginning with the 2022 launch of the Toyota Mirai FCEV demonstration project in partnership with iCAT to evaluate hydrogen’s real-world viability. TKM further collaborated with the Government of Kerala on an FCEV feasibility study and, in 2023, signed an MoU with Ashok Leyland to supply Fuel Cell Modules for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle prototypes.

These initiatives highlight Toyota’s intent to extend hydrogen applications beyond passenger vehicles into commercial mobility and now, through its recent partnership with Ohmium, into power generation. The collaboration with Ohmium marks a strategic shift toward developing hydrogen-based power solutions and infrastructure, reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to ‘Make in India’ by combining global expertise with local innovation.

Together, these efforts reflect TKM’s long-term vision of establishing a sustainable, integrated hydrogen society in India, aligned with the nation’s renewable energy and self-reliance goals.

Union Ministers Shri Nitin Gadkari and Shri Shripad Yesso Naik praised the strategic collaboration between Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) and Ohmium as a significant step toward building a self-reliant, hydrogen-powered India.

Shri Gadkari emphasized hydrogen’s potential as a clean, renewable fuel central to India’s carbon-neutral and energy-independent future. He commended Toyota and Ohmium for their contributions to indigenous hydrogen solutions aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.

Shri Naik highlighted the importance of home-grown, scalable innovations in achieving the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. He noted that collaborations like this are vital for strengthening domestic capabilities and accelerating India’s low-carbon energy transition by 2030.

Shri Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Hon’ble Minister from the Government of NCT of Delhi, lauded the MoU between Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ohmium as a vital step toward grassroots sustainability. He emphasized that green hydrogen can significantly reduce air pollution, support industrial decarbonization, and help create cleaner, future-ready ecosystems. Highlighting the importance of combining global innovation with local expertise, he stated that such collaborations are key to building sustainable industrial zones and achieving a greener, healthier India.

Sharing his thoughts, Mr. Ahmad Chatila, Ohmium Board Chaiman, said, “We are privileged to collaborate with Toyota Kirloskar Motor to integrate our locally manufactured electrolyser technology with their advanced fuel cell systems. This collaboration supports India’s Hydrogen economy goals and demonstrates our commitment to a greener future with cleaner air, better public health, and resilient, secure infrastructure.”

Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Manasi Tata, Vice Chairperson – Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “At Toyota, our commitment to a carbon-neutral future extends beyond clean mobility. Green hydrogen is a vital part of this vision—not only for transportation but also its production, distribution, and diverse end-use applications. Through this collaboration with an innovative PEM technology player like Ohmium, we are not only advancing Hydrogen applications but also reinforcing our support for the country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. By co-developing locally relevant hydrogen solutions, we aim to empower India’s energy transformation and contribute meaningfully to the hydrogen ecosystem.”

Mr. Swapnesh R. Maru, Deputy Managing Director at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, highlighted India’s pivotal moment in its clean energy transition. He emphasized TKM’s commitment to a multi-pathway approach for achieving carbon neutrality, aligned with national goals. The collaboration with Ohmium, he noted, goes beyond mobility, aiming to build a hydrogen-powered, self-reliant, and sustainable India. Maru sees hydrogen as a transformative catalyst for decarbonizing mobility, energy, and industry, and reaffirmed TKM’s dedication to delivering eco-friendly, India-focused solutions through global-local collaboration.
