Exponent Energy reveals 15-minute rapid EV battery charging tech.

To prevent significant cell degradation due to lithium plating during charging, Exponent uses their Battery Management System, Virtual Cell Model, and Dynamic Charging Algorithms, which proactively sense lithium crowding in real-time and ensure rapid charging without significant degradation.

Exponent Energy has revealed the technology behind its 15-minute rapid charging solution for electric vehicles (EVs). The company showcased its proprietary energy stack, comprising the e^pack (battery pack), e^pump (charging station), and e^plug (charging connector), which together enable a 15-minute rapid charge and extend battery life (with a 3000-cycle life warranty, three times the industry standard) using regular LFP cells for the first time.

The rapid charging capability eliminates range anxiety and the need for expensive, oversized battery packs. Exponent’s unique two-sided approach results in EVs powered by their technology being 30% more affordable, achieved through optimized battery capacity (30% smaller) and a 5-year financing plan based on the 3000-cycle life warranty. The 15-minute rapid charging cuts EV charging costs by 33%. Exponent’s energy stack addresses two long-standing issues that have hindered rapid charging on LFP cells – Lithium plating and Extreme heat.

To prevent significant cell degradation due to lithium plating during charging, Exponent uses their Battery Management System, Virtual Cell Model, and Dynamic Charging Algorithms, which proactively sense lithium crowding in real-time and ensure rapid charging without significant degradation. Independent testing by TUV India confirmed only 13% degradation after 3000 charging cycles of 15-minute rapid charging.

To manage the substantial heat generated during 15-minute rapid charging, Exponent employs an advanced HVAC system that is “off-boarded” from the vehicle to the e^pump. This system transfers refrigerated water through the e^plug to cool each Li-ion cell in the e^pack, preventing the temperature from exceeding 35°C in any ambient temperature condition. This approach ensures that EVs powered by Exponent remain affordable and lightweight.

Arun Vinayak, CEO and co-founder of Exponent Energy highlighted how their two-sided approach to rapid charging makes EVs last three times longer and cost 30% less than conventional EVs. Exponent plans to expand its operations in five more cities and deploy 1,000 e-pumps and 25,000 EVs powered by Exponent by 2025.

“At Exponent, we’re building the future of energy that combines cutting-edge engineering with real world economics, and our off-board thermal management system is a testament to that belief. For everyone to go electric, consumers need EVs that charge faster, last longer, and cost lesser. Our unique two-sided approach to 15-minute rapid charging makes EVs last 3 times longer and cost 30% less than conventional EVs. We’re excited to scale this across India starting with Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad,” he said.
