Samsung SDI and Stellantis Select Indiana for Second Joint EV Battery Plant

Samsung SDI and Stellantis have chosen Indiana as the location for their second joint EV battery plant, with plans to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. Learn about their commitment to sustainable mobility and electrification.

Samsung SDI and Stellantis have jointly announced their strategic decision to establish a second electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in the United States, with the selected location being the state of Indiana. This exciting endeavor aims to further revolutionize the electric vehicle industry in collaboration with Stellantis NV, a multinational automotive corporation.

This marks the second joint battery factory for both companies, and it’s poised to make a significant impact. According to Samsung SDI’s official statement, the combined annual production capacity at the Indiana site will reach an impressive 67 gigawatt hours (GWh).

The first joint plant is scheduled to kick off production in the first quarter of 2025, marking the onset of a new era for EV battery manufacturing. The second joint plant is expected to become operational in early 2027, signifying the long-term vision of Samsung SDI and Stellantis in fostering sustainable mobility solutions.

This strategic expansion follows Samsung SDI’s commitment to invest a substantial 2.7 trillion won (approximately USD 2.01 billion) in constructing the second joint battery plant with Stellantis.

Stellantis, a key player in the automotive industry with renowned brands like Peugeot, Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, and Opel, has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to electrification. The company has set ambitious targets, including achieving 100% electric passenger car sales in Europe and a 50% car and light truck electric mix in the United States by 2030.

To meet these goals, Stellantis has emphasized the need to secure approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity, solidifying their position as a leader in the electric vehicle revolution.
