Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) Limited, is marking 10 years of its Eicher Driver Care Program, an initiative focused on improving access to healthcare and vision care for India’s commercial vehicle driver community.
Coinciding with Drivers’ Day, Eicher is commemorating the programme’s 10-year milestone by extending healthcare services to more than 1,000 drivers. The initiative reflects the company’s continued focus on supporting the health and well-being of commercial vehicle drivers, who play a key role in keeping India’s transportation and logistics network moving.
The program reflects Eicher’s broader commitment to modernizing commercial transportation by placing the driver at the centre of the mobility ecosystem. By improving access to preventive healthcare and vision care, Eicher aims to support drivers in performing their roles safely and effectively, while contributing to road safety and logistics efficiency.
Over the past decade, the Eicher Driver Care Program, undertaken in partnership with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), has evolved into a nationwide initiative. Since 2016, the program has conducted 17,000+ eye camps, facilitated more than 8 lakh eye screenings and distributed close to 1 lakh spectacles, reflecting its sustained reach across the country.
Commenting on the milestone, B. Srinivas, MD & CEO, VECV, said, “Drivers are at the heart of India’s transportation ecosystem and play an indispensable role in keeping businesses, communities and the economy moving. As we celebrate Drivers’ Day, completing 10 years of the Eicher Driver Care Program is an important milestone for us. Our partnership with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital has enabled us to consistently take essential vision and healthcare services closer to drivers across the country. We remain committed to supporting their health and well-being and contributing towards safer roads and a stronger commercial transportation ecosystem.”
What began as an effort to improve access to eye care has progressively expanded across key transportation hubs in the country. Today, the program operates through 13 Mobile Eye Vans and one static centre at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, Delhi. The mobile vans currently cover Delhi NCR, Kanpur, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Sambalpur, Guwahati, Pune, Salem, Nashik and Hyderabad, taking essential eye-care services closer to drivers in major transport hubs.
Complementing its healthcare and vision-care efforts, Eicher is also strengthening the social security ecosystem for drivers through Eicher Jagruk Bharat, a nationwide initiative that helps drivers and their families access social security schemes they may be eligible for. Through a WhatsApp chatbot service, drivers can connect with the Jagruk Bharat team by simply giving a missed call or sending “Hi” to 9318350660. The service provides assistance in navigating and accessing relevant social security schemes, extending this support to drivers’ family members as well.
