At a works meeting in Wolfsburg, Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, outlined the future plans for the core brand. Employees were also given an exclusive first look at the design of Volkswagen’s upcoming entry-level electric model, expected to be priced around €20,000.
“With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we have launched the largest future plan in Volkswagen’s history. We are fully committed to our ambitious path to achieving our shared goals. A crucial part of this is making e-mobility accessible to everyone—that is our brand promise,” Schäfer stated.
He also reaffirmed Wolfsburg’s role as the hub for innovation and production expertise, emphasizing that the main plant would set new benchmarks in automobile manufacturing.
Volkswagen plans to present the show car for the new entry-level model to the public at the beginning of March. The world premiere of the production model is scheduled for 2027. With a base price of about €20,000, the new entry-level electric model will be attractive for a wide variety of user groups. Schäfer: “An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!”
Daniela Cavallo, ChairwomN of the General and Group Works Council of Volkswagen AG: “The new all-electric entry-level model will be a Volkswagen in the genuine sense of the term. It is therefore appropriate that our employees at the Wolfsburg plant will be the first to have a preview of the design – before the general public.”
Affordable entry-level electric mobility will be a key pillar of Volkswagen’s future strategy. Alongside the production version of the ID.2all, the brand is developing a new electric small car family under the Brand Group Core within the Volkswagen Group. These compact EVs will be built on the latest evolution of the modular electric drive (MEB) platform. The first model in this lineup, the production version of the ID.2all show car, is set to launch in 2026 as Volkswagen’s first fully electric small car, with a starting price below €25,000.
Volkswagen is already well positioned in the field of all-electric battery electric vehicles (BEV). Since the launch of the ID. product family in 2019, the brand has sold a total of more than 1.35 million ID. vehicles throughout the world, including about 500,000 ID.3. Last year, the Volkswagen brand sold 383,100 all-electric vehicles.
Future of the Wolfsburg Plant
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer reaffirmed that Wolfsburg would remain central to the brand’s electric future. With Golf production shifting to Mexico, space will be made for modern technologies, including new production processes in Hall 54. The next-generation electric Golf and high-volume electric T-Roc will be built on the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), positioning Wolfsburg as the hub for Volkswagen’s all-electric compact class.
SSP will serve as a fully digitalized, highly scalable mechatronics platform for all Volkswagen passenger car brands. Daniel Cavallo emphasized Wolfsburg’s crucial role in technical development and production, with the plant expected to produce over 500,000 electric units per year.
To ensure long-term success, Volkswagen will focus on optimizing complexity, work procedures, and synergies. The Works Council and management will collaborate closely, holding quarterly progress meetings to oversee developments.
Volkswagen’s “Triple A” Strategy: Accelerate, Attack, Achieve
As part of the “Zukunft Volkswagen” (Future Volkswagen) agreement, Volkswagen AG and employee representatives have outlined a vision for economic stability, employment security, and technology leadership in sustainable mobility. The goal is for Volkswagen Passenger Cars to become the world’s leading volume manufacturer by 2030.
To achieve this, Volkswagen has introduced a three-stage “Triple A” plan:
Catch Up: Strengthening competitiveness by optimizing costs and expanding the model portfolio.
Attack: Launching nine new models by 2027, including the ID.2all (under €25,000) and an entry-level electric vehicle (around €20,000).
Lead: Establishing Volkswagen as the technological leader in the volume segment and driving global mobility innovation.
This strategy sets the foundation for Volkswagen’s future growth and leadership in the electric era.
