India’s automobile industry recorded strong growth across major vehicle segments in August 2026, with passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers registering their highest-ever sales for the month, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 31,57,822 units in August 2026.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Rise 36.5%
Domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 4,39,309 units in August 2026, representing a 36.5% year-on-year growth compared with August 2025.
SIAM noted that passenger vehicle sales marked their highest-ever August performance in 2026.
Three-Wheeler Sales Grow 22.8%
Three-wheeler sales also recorded a strong performance during the month, with domestic sales reaching 93,764 units.
The segment registered 22.8% growth over the corresponding period last year, marking its highest-ever August sales.
Two-Wheeler Sales Cross 20 Lakh Units
Two-wheeler sales remained the largest contributor among the reported domestic vehicle segments, reaching 20,34,698 units in August 2026.
The segment recorded 10.5% growth compared with August 2025 and also achieved its highest-ever August sales.
SIAM Highlights Healthy Demand Environment
Commenting on the industry’s August 2026 performance, Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said that passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers had all achieved their highest-ever August sales.
“Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers have recorded highest ever sales of August in 2026. In August 2026, Passenger Vehicles posted sales of 4.39 lakhs units with double digit growth of 36.5%, Three Wheelers sales recorded 0.94 lakhs units with growth of 22.8%, and Two Wheelers Sales logged 20.35 lakhs units with growth of 10.5% compared to the same period of last August 2025.”
Menon said the Indian automobile industry is currently going through a robust growth phase, while noting that the August performance was partly supported by a lower base in the previous year.
He added that the broader demand environment remains fundamentally healthy, supported by strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets and improving financing conditions.
The accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains is also contributing to a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories, according to SIAM.
Festive Demand Expected to Support Q2 Growth
Menon further highlighted the upcoming festive season as a potential driver of additional automotive demand.
“India’s automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase. The growth in August 2026 has been supported by a lower base of previous year. The broader demand environment remains fundamentally healthy. Strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains are creating a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories. Festive demand is also expected to provide an additional boost, resulting in healthy Q2 numbers.”
With passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers all posting record August sales, the industry’s performance points to continued momentum heading into the festive period.
