Osamu Suzuki, the visionary who turned a small Japanese automaker into a global powerhouse, passes away at 94

The passing of Osamu Suzuki at 94 marks the loss of a true pioneer who revolutionized mobility in India with the Maruti 800. His leadership not only transformed the automotive industry but also deepened Indo-Japanese relations, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Osamu Suzuki, the transformative leader who guided Suzuki Motor Corporation to global prominence over more than four decades, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 94 due to lymphoma.

Suzuki Motor Corporation announced his death, marking the end of an era for the company. Osamu Suzuki joined the firm in 1958 through his marriage to Shoko, the granddaughter of founder Michio Suzuki. At the time, the company was primarily focused on manufacturing looms and motorcycles. Under his visionary leadership, it evolved into a global automotive giant, particularly excelling in India and other emerging markets.

Appointed President in 1978 and later serving as Chairman and CEO, Suzuki was celebrated for his conservative financial strategies and dedication to producing small, affordable vehicles. He played a key role in establishing Japan’s “kei car” micro-vehicle segment and spearheaded Suzuki’s partnership with India’s Maruti Suzuki, which grew to become the nation’s largest automobile manufacturer.

Osamu Suzuki, a pivotal figure in the global automotive industry, is renowned for transforming Suzuki Motor Corporation into a global force while maintaining its independence. His leadership, marked by financial prudence, efficient production, and a focus on small cars and emerging markets, helped the company thrive through economic challenges, including the 2008 financial crisis and the dissolution of an alliance with Volkswagen in 2011.

Suzuki stepped down as Chairman in 2021 at the age of 91, after one of the longest leadership tenures in automotive history, passing the reins to his son, Toshihiro Suzuki. His legacy endures as a testament to his strategic vision and dedication to preserving the company’s unique identity. He is survived by his wife, Shoko, and three children.

Mr. R.C. Bhargava’s Statement on Mr. Osamu Suzuki’s Passing

It is with profound sorrow that I mourn the passing of Osamu Suzuki San, whose vision, risk-taking, and love for India transformed our automobile industry into a global powerhouse. His close relationships with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, and his contributions to the Indian economy and India-Japan relations were rightfully honored with the Padma Bhushan.

Osamu San was more than a mentor; he was like a brother who stood by me in my darkest days. He shaped Maruti’s success and my own life through his guidance. Despite his health, he attended my 90th birthday this July—a moment I’ll cherish forever, not knowing it would be our last meeting.

His legacy will endure in Maruti’s milestones and India’s progress. My deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss.
