Lumax Auto Technologies Limited is accelerating its transition toward the rapidly evolving Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) ecosystem through the establishment of a dedicated research and development centre in Bengaluru. The facility, named SHIFT (Smart Hub for Innovation and Future Trends), represents a strategic step in the company’s efforts to integrate software capabilities more deeply into its automotive electronics portfolio and move beyond its traditional hardware-focused operations.
The new centre is already playing a key role in the development of software-enabled products, with company management confirming that it is supporting software integration for Lumax Auto’s upcoming Body Control Modules (BCMs). These products are expected to enter Start of Production (SOP) within the next 45 to 60 days.
Operating on a lean and focused model, the SHIFT facility currently employs around 20 engineers and is expected to incur annual operating costs of approximately ₹5-7 crore. According to the company’s leadership, the investment remains modest relative to the long-term growth opportunities presented by the automotive electronics and software sectors.
Beyond in-house product development, the Bengaluru centre has been tasked with localising the electronic and software solutions offered through Lumax Auto’s various joint ventures. This approach is intended to deliver market-specific technologies tailored to the requirements of Indian automotive manufacturers.
Commenting on the progress made since the centre’s launch, Vikas Marwah, Chief Executive Officer of Lumax Auto Technologies Limited, said the company is encouraged by the momentum generated during the first six months of operations and is pleased with the traction the facility has achieved.
The software-focused initiative complements the strong growth of Lumax Auto’s Mechatronics business, which reported a 150 percent year-on-year increase in revenue during FY2025-26, rising from ₹115 crore to ₹281 crore. The segment currently holds an order book valued at nearly ₹400 crore, underscoring its growing importance within the company’s business portfolio.
Lumax Auto views software and mechatronics as critical enablers in the automotive industry’s transition toward intelligent, connected mobility solutions. As vehicle architectures become increasingly software-driven, the company aims to position itself as a key technology partner for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The Bengaluru R&D centre also supports Lumax Auto’s broader mid-term strategy of evolving from a conventional Tier-1 supplier into a Tier-0.5 system integrator. This transformation is intended to address rising OEM demand for modular and sequential supply systems, where software and hardware components are pre-integrated before reaching vehicle assembly lines, enabling greater efficiency, faster deployment, and enhanced functionality.
