The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP), a leading vehicle safety rating system, has updated its FleetSafe guide, recommending corporates and fleet owners prioritize vehicles with NCAP five-star ratings and UN safety standards.
“Work-related crashes account for a third of global road deaths, making driving one of the biggest risks for employees,” said David Ward, President Emeritus of GNCAP. “Our revised FleetSafe guide helps fleet managers make safer vehicle purchasing decisions, ensuring fleets are equipped with safer vehicles that protect employees and save lives globally.”
Ward further emphasized, “Following Global NCAP guidelines and adopting a five-star commitment is the best way for fleet managers to meet their duty of care, cut road crash costs, and show real leadership in Corporate Social Responsibility. How fleets are purchased, driven, and maintained is crucial for road safety.”
With over 1.1 billion two-wheelers sold globally, Global NCAP stresses the urgent need for enhanced safety features such as ABS, blind spot detection, and improved helmet standards. In India, where two-wheelers account for 44% of road fatalities, safety improvements are a top priority, including better road design and stricter enforcement.
“For greater rider safety, GNCAP recommends anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for all two-wheelers capable of speeds over 50 km/h,” said David Ward, President Emeritus of Global NCAP. “India has led by mandating ABS for bikes above 125cc but could strengthen this further.”
Speaking at the ‘Vehicle and Fleet Safety’ conference hosted by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), Ward emphasized, “ABS has proven to significantly reduce crash risks and fatalities. It should be mandatory for all motorized two-wheelers above 50cc. Safe technologies like ABS are essential and must not be overlooked.”
