Electric vehicle (EV) sales continued their strong upward trajectory in June, with both passenger cars and two-wheelers recording robust growth as rising fuel prices, expanding charging infrastructure and a wider range of models encouraged more consumers to switch to electric mobility.
According to vehicle registration data from the government’s Vahan portal, covering the top 10 manufacturers in each segment, electric two-wheeler registrations rose 62% year-on-year to 170,426 units in June. Electric passenger vehicle registrations grew even faster, more than doubling to 30,454 units, highlighting the rapid adoption of electric cars in the country.
The momentum was equally evident during the April–June quarter. Registrations by the top 10 electric car manufacturers surged 89% year-on-year to 82,737 units, outpacing the 63.6% growth recorded by the top 10 electric two-wheeler manufacturers, which registered 480,373 units.
Industry experts attribute the strong performance in the passenger EV segment to an expanding portfolio of models, particularly SUVs, along with improved charging infrastructure, persistently high fuel prices and growing consumer confidence in electric mobility. Meanwhile, the electric two-wheeler market continues to expand steadily, although it is gradually entering a more mature phase where replacement demand is beginning to complement first-time purchases.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said the sustained growth reflects a long-term transformation rather than a temporary surge.
“Monthly electric car sales are reaching new highs as customers become increasingly comfortable with charging infrastructure, battery warranties and the wider availability of products. The entry of multiple manufacturers has also strengthened consumer confidence that electric mobility is here to stay,” Chandra said.
Among electric two-wheeler manufacturers, TVS Motor retained the top position during the quarter with 127,763 vehicle registrations, marking a 74% year-on-year increase. Bajaj Auto followed closely with 114,670 registrations, up 73%, while Ather Energy posted 86,465 registrations, registering an impressive 95% growth.
Hero MotoCorp recorded the fastest growth among the top five manufacturers, with registrations surging 156% to 55,373 units. In contrast, Ola Electric was the only major player to report a decline, with registrations falling 29% to 42,671 units during the quarter.
In the electric passenger vehicle segment, Tata Motors and Mahindra emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of rising demand, with both companies nearly doubling their registrations compared with the same period last year. Tata Motors retained its leadership with more than 32,000 registrations, while Mahindra crossed the 20,000-unit milestone.
JSW MG Motor India, however, recorded relatively modest growth of 22%, registering 16,502 vehicles during the quarter. As competitors expanded rapidly, the company’s market share declined to 20% from 31% a year earlier, reflecting intensifying competition in India’s fast-growing electric vehicle market.
