Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Mizoram to strengthen employability, mobility and educational opportunities for the state’s visually impaired community.
The partnership aims to improve access to learning resources, enhance the quality of education and create better employment prospects for visually impaired individuals, reinforcing Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s commitment to inclusive development and skill empowerment.
The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Ms. Lalrinpuii, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Government of Mizoram, and Ms. Lalzarmawii, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Government of Mizoram in Aizawl. Mr. Ramesh Rao, Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and Mr. Sachin Sharma, Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, also attended the event.
Mizoram is home to 2,035 visually impaired individuals, of whom less than 1% are currently employed. The state’s challenging terrain and limited availability of mobility equipment significantly restrict movement and access to opportunities for the visually impaired community. In addition, the residential school for visually impaired students in the state faces a shortage of Braille literature and modern learning resources, limiting students’ ability to prepare independently for competitive examinations and acquire new knowledge.
To address these challenges, TKM and the Social Welfare Department will implement the initiative in a phased manner. During the first phase, 250 Navinaut Assistive Mobile Devices will be distributed as a pilot project, along with the supply of Braile computer, printer and AI scanner to the Special Blind School, Durtlang, Aizawl. Based on the outcome of the pilot phase, an additional 930 devices will be distributed in the second phase. The initiative is expected to provide safe mobility support to visually impaired individuals, eliminate dependency on teachers and attendants for knowledge enhancement, and enable students to independently prepare for competitive examinations.
Ms. Lalrinpuii, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Government of Mizoram said, “Development becomes meaningful only when it reaches those who face the greatest barriers. For many visually impaired individuals in Mizoram, challenges related to mobility and access to learning have limited opportunities for education and employment. Our responsibility is to ensure that these barriers do not define a person’s future. This collaboration represents an important step towards building a more inclusive state where every individual has the opportunity to learn, contribute and lead an independent life.”
Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “We view mobility as a means to unlock human potential. When technology can help a person move independently, access information and pursue aspirations with confidence, its impact extends far beyond transportation. Through this collaboration with the Government of Mizoram, we are bringing together assistive mobility solutions and learning tools that can make a meaningful difference in everyday lives. We believe that innovation becomes truly valuable when it removes barriers and creates opportunities for people to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.”
