Maruti Suzuki India Limited crosses 3 million vehicle dispatches through railways

Over the last decade, the automaker has steadily increased the share of railway-based outbound logistics from 5% in FY2014-15 to 26.5% in FY2025-26, significantly reducing dependence on road transportation for vehicle distribution.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a major milestone in sustainable logistics by cumulatively dispatching more than 3 million vehicles through the Indian railway network, reinforcing its commitment to green mobility and environmentally responsible transportation practices.

Over the last decade, the company has steadily increased the share of railway-based outbound logistics from 5% in FY2014-15 to 26.5% in FY2025-26, significantly reducing dependence on road transportation for vehicle distribution.

Maruti Suzuki also highlighted that the jump from 2 million to 3 million cumulative rail dispatches was achieved in just 21 months, making it the fastest one-million milestone in the company’s rail logistics operations.

The achievement reflects the automaker’s continued focus on lowering carbon emissions, improving fuel efficiency in transportation, and strengthening sustainable supply chain operations across India.

Speaking on the milestone, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki, said, “Achieving 3 million cumulative vehicle dispatches through railways marks a significant milestone in Maruti Suzuki’s green logistics journey. Since 2014, our rail-based vehicle dispatches have increased ninefold in volume, now contributing 26.5% of the Company’s total vehicle dispatches. Maruti Suzuki has committed over INR 13,720 million towards dedicated green logistics infrastructure. This includes development of in-plant railway sidings at our Hansalpur and Manesar manufacturing facilities, rail yards set-up at key logistics hubs, procurement of specialized automotive rakes, and supporting multiple infrastructure upgrades.”

He added, “We thank the Government of India for the visionary PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, which has created a strong enabling framework for integrated, multimodal logistics and has supported the industry’s transition towards efficient, rail-led, and sustainable freight movement. Going forward, we aim to increase the share of rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35% by FY2030-31# and plan to establish an in-plant siding at our new Kharkhoda facility. This would further help reduce carbon footprint, lower fuel consumption, and ease overall road congestion.”

Maruti Suzuki is the first and only passenger vehicle OEM in India to have a railway siding at two of its manufacturing facilities at Hansalpur and Manesar. These have been developed under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The first in-plant railway siding at Hansalpur facility commenced operation in March 2023 and was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in March 2024 virtually. In February 2026, the Hansalpur siding was registered as World’s First Modal Shift Transportation Project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program of Verra, an international carbon credit registry and certification body.

In June 2025, Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Nayab Singh Saini flagged off the first train from India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding at the Maruti Suzuki Manesar facility.

The combined dispatch capacity of the two automobile in-plant railway sidings is 750,000 vehicles annually. Together they service more than 600 cities from 22 hubs via a dedicated hub and spoke model and transport popular Maruti Suzuki models such as Dzire, Alto, WagonR, Brezza, Ertiga, Celerio, XL6, Eeco, Super Carry, Swift, Fronx, Baleno, Grand Vitara etc. manufactured at the Company’s Gurugram, Manesar & Gujarat facilities. Port locations of Mundra and Pipavav, used by Maruti Suzuki for exports, are also serviced by railways.
